Congrats, your mental health is now going to get a huge boost. You’re going to get hours back every day that you otherwise spent scrolling. You’ve paved the way for making huge strides in your life that you’ve otherwise spent on your phone. If you spent about 2 hours each day, you’re getting essentially a month back. If it’s more than 2, you’re getting more months. The time you’re getting back is more than enough to make incredible progress on something new. You can invest them in getting better shape, getting farther in school/work, building a business, literally anything. You’re not missing out on anything either. I know that social media can sometimes be an inspiring or interesting source if you follow the right people, but for the most part, you can be far more generative and inspired by reading through a good book. It’s sad thinking about how much time you spent scrolling, only to be inspired 5% of the time consuming fluff for 95% of the time. Be glad it’s over, better things are coming.
As you enter this new phase, I want you to be really careful to not swap out one addiction for another. Don’t take the time you’re not scrolling to scrolling or watching something equally unproductive. Do stuff you’ve wanted to do or learn but put aside. If you want to make the most of this time you’re getting back—and I know you want to—learn to be bored again. Get used to not being stimulated 100% of the time. If you’re used to endless scrolling, your brain is gonna be begging you for stimulation once you sit down and do something boring, but important.
Instead of giving into that instinct you’ve developed over the years, just embrace the boredom. Don’t even listen to music while doing everyday life, honestly. Just embrace the peace of the moment. Let your brain heal while you give full attention to something that will move you forward in life. Don’t multi-task. Don’t stop to check your phone. Just focus. Just do the thing. If you can learn to do deep work like that, day in and day out, knocking out the important, but boring stuff you put off, your life will change exponentially over time. Not even in that much time, honestly. You’ll see it within a week to a month if you just apply focus to the right things.
Seek knowledge, adventure, try stuff you haven’t done before. Make every day sick.
